Cheap, quality, non-wacom Tablet

So for the most part I've bought all my tablets Wacom brand. It's pretty much the staple of the industry, and for good reason. However, today I am here to talk about a cheaper option one can find for less: the Huion brand Turcom line tablet. Specifically, the 8"*5".

These pictures are taken from Amazon.com. Which is where I bought it! The tablet runs for $50 on Amazon (plus free shipping, as Amazon does). The cheapest product Wacom currently has is the Bamboo Splash which runs about $79 + shipping on their website, and around $69 on Amazon. The Bamboo Pen that we use in class actually runs higher at $71 since it is no longer sold by Wacom themselves.

I've used Wacom brands Graphire4 (best one, that thing's a tank), Intuos4, and a bamboo fun (most portable). After trying to work on a 20" screen using a 6" tablet, I decided it was a bit much and wanted to upgrade.

Trying out the Huion is interesting. Unlike the Wacom's built-in USB cable, it has to be plugged-in. I consider this a plus, since my Intuos4's cable broke and in order to replace it the entire tablet has to be sent back to Wacom (a cost of $80+shipping). If the problem for that arose with the Huion, you just need to replace the cable.
The Pen runs on two AAA batteries, which I haven't seen in a tablet before, but it's not a big deal. The top is a click on-and-off so you don't constantly use the batteries up. The pen stand comes with four replacement nibs and a standard nib ring.

The tablet pen has more shake before the pressure begins to work, giving it not as smooth of a feel as Wacom products. On the contrary, the Huion also has 1024 levels of pressure whereas the Bamboo that we use in class has only 512 levels of pressure. This makes the thickness of your lines more accurate the harder you press down.

To finish this off--and because this is an art blog--here's some stuff I made with the Huion:

Thanks for reading, and happy tablet-hunting! \o/

Yoyoyo I'm not dead yet!

Just went on vacation. Sorry I didn't upload too much here, I'm usually putting my stuff up on tumblr and you can see some of the art I've been up to here.

Anyway, for today's update I have here some assignments for King Arthur's class. First a drawing of myself. Please ignore the second leg I was distracted by other people's good art. The second assignment was supposed to be a childhood friend. My first hamster was named Jeffery and since I was the tender age of ten, I decided he needed dragon wings and a raccoon tail (which looks more like a lemur's but whatever). He would fly around, fight off bad spirits with his flame breath, and make my pictures come to life. Small ones of course, otherwise that would be OP.

I PUT THE PICTURES OF NILI UP TOO BECAUSE SHE ASKED ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?

Nathaniel, M.D.

Nathan is a long-time OC of mine. He's undergone few changes throughout the years in terms of design, but his backstory continues to grow. He's a super-genius and basically good at anything...in theory. Yes, a Swiss-army-knife among living beings, but his main practice is medical science and he travels his sector of the universe helping those who cannot help themselves.

Some Knights I stay up...

After deciding the "Dynamic Love Confession"--as it was called--could not be recreated with all the same wit and charm, I used the same concept and feel of a hardened situation where the dialogue didn't match. Here I have designed some simple knights for the project as well as the thumbnailed pages.

Vaughn Redesign

For our minizine/comic homework, I was going to redraw an old comic I doodled out a few years ago. It was a girl and a boy wrestling and throwing each other through walls while planning a dinner date. Vaughn was originally a faun, but for the sake of the joke she had human legs (yet retained her goat ears/horns). Here her design is more of a built, wrestler, and her hairstyle was influenced by the Disney Hercules styles (I wanna keep it Greek). Also inspired by Samantha Wright...cutest heavy weight-lifter. ♥

Amine

After that grueling hands project, we were allowed to relax with some anime-inspired drawings for our homework assignment. First one as shojou, then a few random styles. My friend said my natural style is like Akira Toriyama's. So I gave it a shot.

Dangit he's right.

Give her a hand!...50 of them, to be precise!

Homework assignment to draw 50 hands! I thought I'd do them small, but then the blog said to do them 3 inches? So I didn't submit my first page, and then I was told half had to be holding something? Oh well, have these crazy things anyway. It was fun.
